What's in a Name?
Post by: Lesley Hempfling
Think you have a great name for your new business? Don't rush out and file your Certificate of Formation with the Texas Secretary of State just yet. Follow these steps first to save time and money:
1) Perform a "name availability" search through the Texas Secretary of State's Office.
2) If your name is available pay the nominal fee to reserve your name for 120 days.
3) Search the Texas and federal trademarks to determine if your name is already in use. You don't want to receive a cease and desist letter before you even have your first customer.
4) If you are going to use an assumed name, check with the county where you are registering your assumed name to determine if it is already in use.
